Easter & the Pope who inspires Hope
As a Church and as a Catholic College we mourn the passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday. Fittingly, his final public address on Easter Sunday was filled with the hope of the risen Christ, a hope that Pope Francis embodied.
鈥淭he resurrection of Jesus is indeed the basis of our hope. 鈥 hope does not disappoint! 鈥 That hope is not an evasion, but a challenge; it does not delude, but empowers us.
鈥n this day, I would like all of us to hope anew and to revive our trust in others, including those who are different than ourselves, or who come from distant lands, bringing unfamiliar customs, ways of life and ideas! For all of us are children of God!鈥

All families are encouraged to join the Mother鈥檚 Day mass being celebrated in our College Chapel on Tuesday 13 May from 7.30pm. A light supper is provided afterwards for the chance to chat with staff and fellow Aquinas families.
USA Music Trip
It was truly a privilege to travel with 40 Aquinas students and 4 colleagues on the 91自拍 USA Music Trip last month, one of the best experiences of my 30+ years in Catholic education. The joint performances with students from Cardinal Spellman High School were a highlight (as was their cafeteria for our students!) and we look forward to returning the hospitality of their President Daniel O鈥橩eeffe in early 2026. Thanks to Spellman, one of the performances can be viewed in full here:
On behalf of the students and myself, I express my deepest thanks to Aquinas Music Coordinators Alison Bellew & Emily McKenzie, along with Adrian Perri & Daniel Lijnders for their organisation and leadership before and during the trip. Our students were perfect ambassadors for Aquinas and for the joy that music brings. Please see later in this newsletter for more details & pictures!
I thank Deputy Principals Michael Box and Jessica Alger for their leadership as Acting Co-Principals during my absence.
Lifelong benefits of a Catholic Education
The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey is a longitudinal study examining data from 2000-2022. A recent analysis undertaken by the Centre for International Research on Education Systems (CIRES) at Victoria University noted significant evidence of lifelong benefits of attending Catholic schools. The report notes 鈥渁fter controlling for a comprehensive set of alternative explanatory factors, attendance at a Catholic school was found to have a positive effect upon many outcomes. Compared to people who attended government schools, people who attended a Catholic school were found, on average, to:

Staff PL: Student Wellbeing Day
Staff returned for Term 2 to focus on Student Wellbeing on the 22 April professional learning day. Further preparations were completed for our 2026 Vertical Pastoral systems implementation, along with initial preparations for Positive Behaviour for Learning, a framework to further enhance student wellbeing and our college culture. The afternoon included a variety of sessions on staff wellbeing.
Vertical Pastoral Groups update
Thanks to families who responded to the Vertical Pastoral Groups survey from the 21 March Lighthouse. A similar student survey received almost 1000 responses and will be combined with the recent staff survey to help shape the way forward. We are in the process of compiling an FAQ document to respond to the queries submitted via the families and student surveys, with the intention of making this available to all families in the coming weeks. To clarify the three most common issues:
- The college will be subsidising new sports polo tops for students who move to a new House in 2026
- The THRIVE period will have sessions that are both vertical and horizontal, depending on the content / focus
- The 2026 timetable will include movement time between morning homeroom and period 1 to ensure students do not lose any learning time
